Essential Hindi Phrases for Beginners: Greetings and Everyday Expressions

Speak Hindi with Confidence, One Phrase at a Time

If you’re new to Hindi and want to start speaking it right away, you don’t need to master grammar or memorize complex vocabulary. What you need first are simple, practical expressions you can use every day. Whether you’re traveling to India, talking to Hindi-speaking friends, or just curious about the language, this guide will walk you through the most essential Hindi phrases to get started.

1. Greetings & Introductions

Hello – नमस्ते (Namaste) or नमस्कार (Namaskaar)
These two greetings are polite, respectful, and can be used at any time of day. You can say them while entering a shop, meeting someone for the first time, or even saying goodbye. “Namaste” literally means “I bow to you”  it’s more than a greeting, it’s a gesture of respect.

Good morning – सुप्रभात (Suprabhaat)
Good night – शुभ रात्रि (Shubh raatri)
These are a bit formal and poetic but nice to use if you want to sound polite and thoughtful.

How are you?
-कैसे हैं आप? (Kaise hain aap?) (formal)
कैसे हो तुम? (Kaise ho tum?) (informal)

Use aap when speaking to someone older, a stranger, or in formal situations. Use tum with friends or people your age.

My name is… – मेरा नाम ___ है। (Mera naam ___ hai.)
What’s your name?आपका नाम क्या है? (Aapka naam kya hai?)

2. Courtesy Phrases

These polite expressions are short, sweet, and appreciated in all settings:

Thank youशुक्रिया (Shukriya) or धन्यवाद (Dhanyavaad)
Please – कृपया (Kripaya) (formal), but in casual speech, tone usually replaces the word.
Sorry / Excuse me – माफ़ कीजिए (Maaf kijiye) or क्षमा करें (Kshama karein)

If you bump into someone or need to get someone’s attention, a gentle “maaf kijiye” works perfectly.

3. Basic Responses

Yes- हाँ (Haan)
No – नहीं (Nahi)
I am fine. मैं ठीक हूँ। (Main theek hoon.)
I don’t know. – मुझे नहीं पता। (Mujhe nahi pata.)

You can mix these into conversations quickly. For example, if someone asks, “Kaise hain aap?” you can reply, “Main theek hoon.”

4. Everyday Questions

Question words help you make sense of the world around you. Here are some key ones:

  • What? – क्या (Kya)

  • Who?कौन (Kaun)

  • Where? –  कहाँ (Kahaan)

  • How?कैसे (Kaise)

  • When?कब (Kab)

Examples:

  • यह क्या है? (Yeh kya hai?) – What is this?

  • वह कौन है? (Woh kaun hai?) – Who is that?

  • बाजार कहाँ है? (Bazaar kahaan hai?) – Where is the market?

5. Shopping & Directions

If you’re out and about, these phrases will come in handy:

  • How much is this? – यह कितना है? (Yeh kitna hai?)

  • Leftबाएँ (Baayen)

  • Right – दाएँ (Daayen)

  • One – एक (Ek)

  • Two – दो (Do)

  • Three – तीन (Teen)

You can point at something in a shop and ask, “Yeh kitna hai?” The vendor will most likely respond with numbers, so knowing basic numbers helps.

6. Practice Tips for Beginners

  • Start small. Use namaste when entering a store or greeting your neighbor. It’s respectful, simple, and instantly understood.

  • Repeat aloud. Say the phrases out loud until your tongue gets used to the sounds.

  • Watch and listen. Hindi movies, YouTube clips, and conversations are great for picking up pronunciation.

  • Be patient. Don’t aim for perfection. If you make mistakes, that’s part of learning.

Final Thoughts

You don’t need to be fluent to make meaningful connections. A few kind words in someone’s native language go a long way. These essential Hindi phrases will help you navigate everyday interactions, show respect, and feel more confident speaking Hindi from day one.
