When Jessica Kumar first came to India over two decades ago, it was for a simple internship just a few months of cross-cultural experience. But life had other plans.

During her time in India, she was introduced to a mutual friend, an Indian man living in the United States. Though they were on opposite sides of the globe, they connected, bonded, and eventually met in person while Jessica was in the U.S. They got married there, built a life together in the States for a few years, and later made the intentional decision to move back to India.

It was a deeply personal choice but one that, for many on the outside, didn’t make sense.

What followed was far from the dreamy “Eat Pray Love” narrative many imagined. Jessica was met with skepticism  not just from strangers, but from Indian society at large.

Some common stereotypes that Indians have about foreigners marrying Indians:

• Indians just marry Americans so they can get a green card.
• Dark skinned and light skinned people aren’t a match.
• People who mix white genes dilute their gene pool with Indian blood.
• Foreigners who move to India are destroying their lives.

Fortunately, Jessica and her husband had thick skin and knew that leaving the US was the right thing to do for them as a family. They desired to raise their family in India and pursue opportunities in fields which may not have made sense to relatives and friends.

But She Didn’t Crumble. She Created.

Instead of being silenced by the mockery, Jessica turned inward and then outward. She decided to stay. To learn. To build.
