“But Everyone Speaks English, Right?” — Why I Still Teach (and Love) Hindi
If I had a rupee for every time someone told me, “Why bother learning Hindi? Everyone speaks English these days,” I’d probably own stock in a samosa factory by now.
Let me introduce myself. I’m Jessica Kumar — an American who fell in love with Hindi, married into Indian culture, and now teaches Hindi to learners around the world. So when someone tells me that Hindi “isn’t useful,” I can’t help but channel a little Bollywood sass.
In fact, I made a Reel where I roll my eyes and respond with a spicy audio clip telling the naysayers to, well… “Tum chup raho.” (Respectfully, of course. 😉)
But here’s the serious truth behind the sarcasm:
Hindi isn’t just a language — it’s a gateway.
Sure, English might be a global powerhouse, but Hindi opens doors English simply can’t. It gives you access to:
Bollywood movies without subtitles
Everyday conversations with Indian family and friends
Cultural richness you can’t Google
Poetry, humor, and emotion that only exist in Hindi words
Over 600 million people speak Hindi. That’s not a side language — it’s a global community. And learning it is an act of connection, curiosity, and courage.
